Gaṇḍānta refers to the junction zones at the cusp between water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) and the following fire signs (Leo, Sagittarius, Aries) — both in the rashi (sign) and nakshatra divisions. The last 3°20' of the water nakshatras (Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati) and first 3°20' of the fire nakshatras (Magha, Mula, Ashwini) are considered gandanta zones. Planets or the lagna within these points are in an energetically unstable position — classical texts recommend ritual remediation for births at these junctions. Despite the warnings, many celebrated charts have gandanta placements that manifest as deep karmic intensity rather than consistent misfortune.
