Scope
> This material is a traditional astrological indication and is not medical, financial, legal, safety, or other professional advice.
In this tradition of Jyotish, prakriti assessment is treated as a comparison of constitutional tendencies rather than as a diagnosis. The ascendant and its lord are given particular importance, while planetary placements, aspects, conjunctions, dignity, and relative strength may modify the reading.
Assessment sequence
1. Examine the ascendant
Planets occupying or aspecting the ascendant are traditionally associated with strong bodily influences. Planets joined to or aspecting the ascendant lord may also contribute. The Moon may describe mental tendencies, although it is not treated as the sole basis for bodily prakriti in this method.
2. Compare planetary strength
Placement in the ascendant is not treated as sufficient by itself. Sign dignity, inherent planetary nature, and relative strength are also compared. A stronger planet may suggest the dominant prakriti, while three reasonably strong planets representing different constitutions may indicate a mixed type.
For example, an unafflicted Sun may be read as stronger than a debilitated Mars. Mars may tend to dominate Mercury when their other conditions are comparable. An exalted and dominant Mars may suggest a more constructive expression of pitta, whereas a debilitated Mars may be associated with weakened agni and possible vata-like digestive disturbance.
3. Distinguish constitution from aggravation
No prakriti is treated as inherently harmful. Debilitation, retrogradation, or difficult planetary influence may suggest that a constitutional tendency has become aggravated. In this framework, a debilitated planet may retain an impaired health-related indication even when cancellation of debilitation is present.
4. Resolve combinations
In a Cancer-ascendant example with an exchange between the first and seventh lords, Saturn placed in the ascendant may initially suggest a vata or vayu tendency. The result would still be compared with the condition of the Moon, relevant aspects, and the strength of other participating planets.
A Moon–Rahu conjunction is often read as allowing Rahu to dominate, which may suggest increased vata or vayu alongside disturbed kapha. An afflicted Moon may similarly be associated with disturbed kapha. Jupiter in a water sign such as Scorpio may suggest increased kapha through the combined symbolism of Jupiter and the water element.
5. Consider timing
Mahadasha and antardasha periods may intensify or reduce an existing constitutional tendency. Seasonal conditions may also affect how strongly a pitta tendency appears. Timing is therefore treated as a modifier rather than as a replacement for the natal assessment.
Verification
Traditionally, the chart-based conclusion may be checked against the person's reported nature and physical tendencies. Questions about recurring patterns may help test whether the proposed vata, pitta, kapha, or mixed interpretation is plausible. Observations such as digestive discomfort, respiratory complaints, body-weight tendencies, or changes in hair are only traditional correlates and should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional when relevant.
