Meaning and Formation
In this tradition of Jyotish, Grahan Dosha may be identified when Rahu or Ketu is joined with the Sun or Moon in a chart. Rahu and Ketu are traditionally treated as non-physical points arising from the relationship among the Sun, Moon, and Earth, which may make their connections with the luminaries especially significant.
The word grahan is associated with an eclipse or covering. The Sun or Moon remains present during an eclipse but its light becomes obscured. Astrologically, this image may suggest that an underlying capacity remains available while its clarity or expression becomes temporarily difficult to access.
Traditional Interpretation
The Sun is often read in relation to identity, direction, and self-expression, while the Moon is often read in relation to the mind and emotional perception. Their connection with Rahu or Ketu may therefore indicate tension between personal direction and mental clarity.
Such a combination may be associated with uncertain judgment, inconsistent decisions, restlessness, or difficulty seeing circumstances clearly. Rahu's involvement can also suggest tendencies toward harsh speech, careless expenditure, weak saving habits, wandering, or excessive influence from one's surroundings. These indications describe possible tendencies rather than fixed outcomes.
Factors Affecting Emphasis
The apparent strength of the combination tends to be judged partly by proximity. A closer conjunction between Rahu or Ketu and the Sun or Moon is traditionally read as potentially more pronounced.
The broader chart may also shape how the indication is understood. If both luminaries are involved, or if the combination appears alongside another significant affliction, its themes may be treated as more prominent. In some D12 approaches, Rahu with the Sun or Moon may additionally be considered in the assessment of lineage-related difficulties, although this remains specific to that interpretive framework.
Scope of the Indication
Grahan Dosha is best treated as one astrological factor within a wider chart assessment. It may point toward areas where perception, identity, emotional balance, or decision-making require closer interpretation, but it does not establish a certain event, behavior, or outcome.
