Overview

In this tradition of Jyotish, planetary strength is a broad judgment of how forcefully and smoothly a planet may express its indications. It is traditionally associated with dignity, house placement, divisional chart condition, support from sign lords or dispositors, and the specific purpose of the chart being examined.

A strong or exalted planet can suggest smoother expression of its results, especially when supported by placements such as kendras or trikonas. However, strength by itself is often read as power or impact, not necessarily as pleasantness. A planet placed in a kendra may become forceful and influential, but its results may still be favorable or difficult depending on the wider context.

Main Factors

Dignity

Planetary dignity includes conditions such as own sign, mool trikona, exaltation, debilitation, and vargottama status. Traditionally, own sign, mool trikona, or exaltation can suggest stronger expression, especially in divisional charts such as D60. Vargottama status is also treated as strong, though it is not necessarily interpreted as identical to exaltation.

Debilitation is treated as a meaningful weakness and is not usually dismissed simply because another factor is present. For example, a planet debilitated in Navamsha may still carry a weakened indication, even if other placements add some support.

D1 and D9 Together

Final planetary strength is traditionally judged by looking beyond the main birth chart. The D1 chart and the D9 Navamsha are both considered important for assessing the final condition of a planet. Exaltation or debilitation in only one layer can give an incomplete picture.

If a planet appears weak in Navamsha, the sign lord may be examined for support. When that lord is well placed, especially in a kendra or trikona, the planet may be read as less weak than it first appears.

Kendras and Trikonas

Kendra placement is traditionally associated with power, visibility, and strong impact. Trikona support can suggest smoother or more supportive expression. A planet that is strong but outside a kendra or trikona may still produce good indications, though the expression may be less smooth.

A combust planet is treated as remaining combust even when placed in a kendra. In that condition, the kendra placement may not remove the combustion concern.

Divisional Chart Context

In divisional charts, planetary strength is read according to the purpose of that chart. A planet may appear stronger or weaker in a divisional chart than in D1, and that contrast can clarify the interpretation.

In D10, exaltation or debilitation is not taken as a complete judgment by itself. Opposing or balancing forces are traditionally considered before drawing conclusions about professional indications.

In D27, a planet such as Mars becoming exalted can be used as a strength indicator that may differ from its D1 condition.

In D45, dispositor condition can modify the result of an exalted planet. For example, an exalted Sun may be read less favorably if its relevant dispositor is debilitated.

In D60, strong dignity such as own sign, mool trikona, or exaltation can suggest strong results connected to that planet's significations.

Context Can Change the Meaning of Strength

Strength is not treated as automatically beneficial in every chart or topic. In D20, a moksha-oriented chart, strong or exalted planets may suggest attachment, which can be read as less favorable in that spiritual context.

In some contexts, powerful malefic planets or strong lords of difficult houses may be treated cautiously. A powerful Moon may be read as supportive in that same context, while a powerful Mars or strong difficult-house lord may suggest more challenging indications.

Practical Reading Principle

Traditionally, planetary strength is assessed as a layered judgment. Dignity, house placement, combustion, vargottama status, sign-lord support, dispositor condition, and divisional chart purpose all contribute to the reading. A planet may be strong yet difficult, weak yet supported, or dignified yet modified by another factor.
