In this tradition of Jyotish, an Antardasha is a planetary sub-period operating within a larger Mahadasha. The Mahadasha is often treated as the broader context, while the Antardasha may suggest how that context becomes more specific during a shorter interval.
Traditional Interpretation
Antardasha results are traditionally assessed through the indications of the governing Mahadasha. An Antardasha may emphasize a topic when its ruling planet and the Mahadasha ruler affect common houses, planets, or areas of life. An indication associated only with the Antardasha is generally treated cautiously when the broader Mahadasha does not support the same theme.
A change of Mahadasha may suggest a wider change in circumstances, while a change of Antardasha may indicate a shift within that larger framework. A planetary Antardasha is ordinarily counted once within each Mahadasha, although the surrounding Mahadasha ruler changes its interpretive context.
Divisional Charts and Timing
For a matter associated with a divisional chart, the Antardasha may be examined within that same chart. For example, questions associated with the D16 chart may be assessed through Antardasha conditions in D16 rather than by combining unrelated factors from another chart.
Planetary dignity, placement, and benefic or difficult influences may be considered when evaluating whether a period tends toward supportive or challenging indications. More specific timing may also be assessed through a smaller sub-period, traditionally called Pratyantardasha.
Scope of Use
Antardasha analysis may be applied to topics such as opportunities, finances, changing circumstances, or traditional health-related timing indications. Such readings remain interpretive and should not be treated as certainty, diagnosis, or a substitute for professional guidance.
