Definition

In Jyotish, a degree is a unit used to describe a planet’s precise position within a zodiac sign. Each sign contains 30 degrees. A planet is described as entering a sign near 0 degrees, progressing through it, and moving into the following sign after completing 30 degrees.

A planet’s degree may therefore be understood as the distance it has covered through its current sign. Traditionally, this position may help refine an assessment of the planet’s condition and role in a chart.

How Degrees Are Used

Planetary proximity

Degrees may help determine how closely planets are placed. In conjunction analysis, planets whose ranges of influence overlap may be treated as forming a more effective conjunction, while widely separated planets in the same sign may be read as interacting less directly.

Divisional and nakshatra analysis

Degree positions are used to derive Navamsha placements. A planet’s degree determines the Navamsha division into which it falls. Degree-level precision may also support nakshatra analysis and the assessment of degree-specific exaltation or debilitation positions.

Degree-based interpretation

Some Nadi approaches traditionally associate particular planetary degrees with specific interpretive results. When several planets occupy the same area, their relative degrees may also be compared as one method of assessing which planet has a stronger influence over matters associated with that house.

Practical Significance

A sign placement provides a broad location, while the degree supplies finer positional detail. For this reason, degrees may be used to distinguish planets that share a sign but occupy substantially different parts of it. Degree analysis is often read together with signs, houses, nakshatras, planetary relationships, and divisional charts rather than as a complete judgment by itself.
