Kendra

In this tradition of Jyotish, kendra is commonly used for the angular houses of a chart. The four kendras are treated as important structural points and are often read for strength, responsibility, and the ability to act in the world.
Core Meaning
Traditionally, a planet placed in a kendra may be considered strengthened or made more capable of expressing its significations. This strength is not read as a complete judgment by itself. A kendra placement may show capacity, while the actual experience can still involve effort, pressure, or struggle depending on the wider chart context.
Some interpretive traditions also read planets in kendras as connected with prior merit. In that framing, such placements may suggest support or stored capacity that helps the person carry responsibilities.
Kendras and Duty
Kendras are often associated with power, energy, and the capacity to fulfill duty. A strong kendra pattern may indicate greater ability to meet responsibilities, while a weaker kendra pattern may suggest that duties require more effort or steadiness.
This is sometimes contrasted with trines, which are traditionally associated with blessing or ease. In this comparison, trines may suggest smoother support, while kendras may suggest the power needed to perform responsibilities.
Fourfold Mapping
One traditional mapping connects the four kendras with the four purusharthas:
- First house: dharma
- Tenth house: artha
- Seventh house: kama
- Fourth house: moksha
In this usage, the kendras may be read as the main supports through which life aims are expressed.
Use in Divisional Charts
Kendra principles may also be applied in divisional charts such as Navamsha, Dashamsha, and Vimshamsha. For example, a planet or lagna lord in a kendra may be read as supportive for a topic being examined in that chart, such as duty, career orientation, relational tendencies, or devotional inclination.
These indications remain contextual. A kendra placement can suggest strength or emphasis, but it is traditionally judged alongside dignity, aspects, conjunctions, house rulership, and the purpose of the specific chart being interpreted.
