Definition

In Vastu-related Jyotish usage, South-West refers to the directional zone centered on 225°. For compass assessment, it is commonly measured from approximately 214° to 236°.

Traditionally, this zone is associated with command, ownership, privacy, and relationship matters. Its condition may therefore be considered when examining the placement of an owner's seat, a principal bedroom, guests, storage, or other activities within a building.

Traditional Use

The owner or principal occupant is often advised to use this area, with the western portion of the South-West sometimes preferred for seating. A principal bedroom may also be placed here, while unrestricted use of that room or bed by others is traditionally treated as unsuitable. A guest room in this zone is likewise often read as potentially disruptive to privacy or relationships.

Traditional guidance tends to favor substantial weight toward the South and West. In a South-West bedroom, a wooden bed without storage may be preferred. If a box bed is used, storage may be limited to clothes and usable bedding rather than utensils, electronics, metal objects, toys, or reading material.

Disturbances and Responses

Seepage, unwanted plants, spoiled footwear, unsuitable objects, or neglected accumulation in this zone may be treated as Vastu disturbances. Such conditions can be examined when relationship concerns are present, although they do not establish a particular outcome.

A washroom beneath stairs, especially in the South-West, is traditionally regarded as an unsuitable arrangement. Where a directional defect is identified, yellow may be used as a customary corrective color. Removing unwanted accumulation and reviewing the placement, weight, access, and function of the area may also be considered traditional remedial steps.
