Meaning

In Jyotish usage, Swami commonly means the planetary lord, ruler, or owner of a house or sign. For example, the phrase “lord of the ninth house” identifies the planet that rules the sign occupying that house.
Role in Interpretation
In this tradition of Jyotish, a house lord placed in another house is often read as carrying themes associated with the house it rules into the house it occupies. The resulting indications may depend on the planet’s natural significations, its placement, its additional lordship, and other chart factors.
Lordship and occupation are treated as distinct considerations. A planet may rule a house without occupying it, while other planets may be placed there. A house lord is also distinguished from a karaka, or significator, because the two roles can belong to different planets.
Interpretive Caution
The functional nature of a house lord may vary according to the ascendant and the complete pattern of lordship. Traditional principles concerning difficult houses, maraka roles, or kendra lordship can also be interpreted differently. The term Swami therefore identifies rulership, but does not by itself establish a specific outcome.
