Meaning of Balidani Graha
In this tradition of Jyotish, a balidani graha, also called a kurbani graha, is traditionally understood as a companion planet that may receive or reduce part of the difficulty associated with an afflicted planet. The term describes a sacrificial or burden-receiving role rather than a planet directly confronting another planet.
This principle can suggest that the condition of both planets should be considered when interpreting an affliction. The planet assigned to receive the burden may itself show strain, while a sufficiently strong receiving planet may be read as reducing the severity attributed to the original affliction.
Traditional Planetary Relationships
The following relationships are traditionally associated with this framework:
- Venus may serve as the balidani planet for Saturn.
- Ketu may serve as the balidani planet for the Sun.
- The Moon may serve as the balidani planet for Venus.
- Ketu may serve as the balidani planet for Mars and Mercury.
Within the Saturn–Venus relationship, Rahu and Ketu are also traditionally treated as Saturn's agents. Their combined symbolism is associated with Venus in this interpretive framework, which may help explain why Saturn's difficulty is often read as passing toward Venus.
Assessing the Receiving Planet
Identifying the assigned balidani planet is only one part of the interpretation. Its strength, placement, and afflictions should also be assessed because these factors may suggest whether it can carry or reduce the transferred difficulty.
For example, a strong Venus may be read as absorbing some of Saturn's adverse indication when Saturn is troubled by planetary conflict, an unfavorable effect, or a difficult house placement. If Venus is weak or afflicted, the protective or burden-reducing effect may be limited.
The Moon's Support Options
The Moon is traditionally described as having several possible sources of support. Jupiter may be considered first, while the Sun or Mars may also take a supporting role when Jupiter is itself troubled. This layered support structure may help explain why an afflicted Moon can produce different indications in different charts.
The final interpretation therefore tends to depend on the condition of the original planet, the assigned balidani planet, and any alternate supporting planets.
