Overview
In this tradition of numerology, a date of birth is divided into day, month, and year components. Each component is reduced to a single digit before the primary and secondary numbers are calculated.
This method provides a consistent numerical structure for later techniques, including Lo Shu grid preparation, pinnacle calculations, and personal-year calculations. Any interpretation assigned to the resulting numbers is traditionally treated as indicative rather than certain.
Reduction Method
Write the date in DD-MM-YYYY format and reduce each component separately:
- D: Add the digits of the day until one digit remains.
- M: Add the digits of the month until one digit remains.
- Y: Add all four digits of the year and continue reducing until one digit remains.
For example, October reduces from 10 to 1, November from 11 to 2, and December from 12 to 3.
Primary Number
The primary number is the reduced day component, D. For a birth day of 18:
1 + 8 = 9
The primary number is therefore 9.
Secondary Number
The secondary number is calculated by adding the reduced day, month, and year components. If the result contains more than one digit, it is reduced again.
For 18 June 1981:
- Day:
18 → 1 + 8 = 9 - Month:
06 → 6 - Year:
1981 → 1 + 9 + 8 + 1 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1 - Component total:
9 + 6 + 1 = 16 → 1 + 6 = 7
Using this method, the primary number is 9 and the secondary number is 7.
Recording the Result
A compact working format is:
DD-MM-YYYY → D-M-Y → primary / secondary
For the example above:
18-06-1981 → 9-6-1 → 9 / 7
When these values are later entered into a Lo Shu grid, the original birth-date digits may be placed first. The primary, secondary, and name numbers may then be added with distinct marks or labels so that their origins remain clear.
Related Calculations
Some numerology systems also use the reduced D-M-Y structure as the starting point for pinnacle numbers. Personal-year calculations use a related but separate procedure in which the birth year is replaced by the year associated with the most recently reached birthday. Methods involving number strength, positional weighting, or special compound numbers can vary between numerology systems and are best recorded separately from the basic reduction.
