In this tradition of numerology, the Heart Desire Number—also called the Soul Urge Number and, in some usage, the Solar Number—is traditionally associated with a person's inner orientation. It may indicate underlying hopes, motivations, preferences, life vision, and ways of processing experience.

Calculation
The calculation uses the vowels in the full name. In this method, A, E, I, O, U, and Y are treated as vowels, while consonants are omitted.
Basic method
- Write the complete name being examined.
- Identify every vowel in the name.
- Assign each vowel its value under the chosen name-numerology system.
- Add the vowel values across the whole name.
- Reduce the total to the required final number, while checking separately for master numbers 11, 22, or 33.
The whole name is treated as one unit, even when it contains several parts. A name used consistently for roughly two to four years may be regarded as more relevant to the person's current inner orientation.
Example
If a name contains two A letters and two E letters, the recorded values may be added as 1 + 1 + 5 + 5 = 12. Reducing 12 gives 3, so the Heart Desire Number in this example is 3.
