Meaning

In this tradition of numerology, the Heart Desire Number—also called the Soul Urge Number and, in some usage, the Solar Number—is traditionally associated with a person's inner orientation. It may indicate underlying hopes, motivations, preferences, life vision, and ways of processing experience.

The number is often treated as a supporting layer rather than the foundation of a reading. The primary, secondary, and name numbers may provide the broader structure, while the Heart Desire Number can add nuance to the interpretation.

Calculation

The calculation uses the vowels in the full name. In this method, A, E, I, O, U, and Y are treated as vowels, while consonants are omitted.

Basic method

  1. Write the complete name being examined.
  2. Identify every vowel in the name.
  3. Assign each vowel its value under the chosen name-numerology system.
  4. Add the vowel values across the whole name.
  5. Reduce the total to the required final number, while checking separately for master numbers 11, 22, or 33.

The whole name is treated as one unit, even when it contains several parts. A name used consistently for roughly two to four years may be regarded as more relevant to the person's current inner orientation.

Example

If a name contains two A letters and two E letters, the recorded values may be added as 1 + 1 + 5 + 5 = 12. Reducing 12 gives 3, so the Heart Desire Number in this example is 3.

Interpretive Themes

These themes are traditional indications and may be modified by the other numbers in a complete reading.

Number 1

Heart Desire Number 1 may suggest independence, confidence, honesty, loyalty, appreciation of recognition, and a preference for making one's own path. These qualities may resemble some solar themes without necessarily indicating leadership in every context.

Number 2

Heart Desire Number 2 is traditionally associated with lunar qualities such as sensitivity, softness, emotional responsiveness, and cooperation. It may suggest a preference for partnership or team-based activity, together with possible hesitation, indecision, or heightened sensitivity. Cultivating patience and decisiveness may be considered supportive.

Number 3

Heart Desire Number 3 is traditionally linked with Jupiter. It may indicate expression through speech, writing, drawing, or other visible forms, and writing can be experienced as energizing. It may also suggest intuition, peaceful preferences, comfort speaking in groups, and tenderness toward people, animals, plants, or the natural world.

Number 6

Heart Desire Number 6 is traditionally associated with Venus. Its effect is often assessed through its relationship with the other prominent numbers; a neutral or supportive relationship may be left undisturbed.

Master numbers

If 11, 22, or 33 appears during the calculation, it may be examined as a master number rather than interpreted only through ordinary reduction. Its meaning can vary according to its placement as the Heart Desire Number.

Use in Name Assessment

When a name change is being considered, altering vowels can also change the Heart Desire Number. Traditionally, the intended name number, the existing vowel total, and other calculations such as the Lo Shu pattern are reviewed together. If the current Heart Desire Number appears suitable, changing consonants while retaining the vowels may be considered. Any proposed adjustment is best treated as an interpretive numerology exercise rather than a certain means of producing outcomes.
