Overview

In this tradition of Jyotish numerology, the name number is often treated as the expression number and is calculated through the Chaldean method. It may be considered a variable element because a person's name or commonly used form of identification can change, while date-derived numbers remain fixed.

Choosing the Name

The name used most frequently, or the form by which a person is ordinarily recognized, is traditionally treated as having greater relevance than a printed or official form that is rarely used. All included name parts are combined to produce one final name number.

Calculation Method

  1. Write the selected name and separate it into its component parts.
  2. Assign each letter its value from the adopted Chaldean number table.
  3. Add the letter values within each name part.
  4. Reduce each subtotal when the method requires it.
  5. Add the subtotals and reduce the combined result to obtain the name number.

For example, if two name parts each total 24, each subtotal reduces to 6. The combined value is then 6 + 6 = 12, which reduces to 3. Similarly, two parts valued at 6 and 6 produce 12 and then 3.

The numbers 11, 22, and 33 are traditionally recognized in name-based numerology, so the convention used for handling these totals should be established before reduction.

Use with the Lo Shu Grid

In a Lo Shu workflow, date-of-birth digits are entered first. The primary number, secondary number, and name number may then be added to the grid. The name number is often read as the adjustable component among these values.

Vacant positions, repeated numbers, and compatibility with the existing grid may be considered before selecting a different name number. Such assessment remains contextual rather than a universal rule.

The Heart Desire or Soul Urge Number is traditionally calculated through selected letters, such as vowels or consonants, and may be treated as an additional layer rather than the foundation of the reading. Inclusion and Hidden Passion Numbers are also associated with name-based analysis.

Selection and Name Changes

Name-number tables may be consulted when considering personal names, children's names, company names, or name changes. Some applications in this tradition may avoid 4, 7, or 8 specifically when choosing a name number, but this guidance is not treated as a universal restriction across every numerology calculation.

Number 8 is traditionally associated with Saturn and may be read as suggesting delay or slower development. Compatibility between a proposed number and the other calculated numbers is therefore often considered before any change. These indications are symbolic and should not be treated as fixed outcomes.
