In this tradition of Jyotish, combustion describes a planet situated within a specified degree range of the Sun. Traditional tables assign different combustion limits to different planets. The condition is often described symbolically as the planet's light becoming dimmed by the Sun.

Combustion may indicate reduced planetary strength or a less direct expression of the planet's significations. It is generally treated as a modification rather than a complete denial: the planet may continue to function, although its results can require greater effort or may become less readily available.

Interpretive Principles

Solar dominance

When a planet is combust, the Sun may become the dominant influence within the conjunction and its house. This does not necessarily suggest that the Sun literally performs every function of the combust planet. Rather, the planet's significations may become subordinate to, filtered through, or controlled by solar themes.

Significations and house rulership

A combust planet may give reduced or less favorable expression to its natural significations and the houses it rules. If it rules a difficult house, combustion may reduce some difficult indications, but beneficial matters belonging to that house may also become weaker or delayed.

A relevant combust planet may sometimes suggest difficulty recognizing or expressing the matter under examination. In a fifth-house relationship context, for example, this has traditionally been read as possible difficulty feeling or recognizing affection rather than as a certain psychological conclusion.

Timing periods

During the dasha or antardasha of a combust planet, its weakened condition may become more noticeable. Some traditional readings associate such periods with increased health strain, material setbacks, or financial pressure. These indications require cautious contextual assessment and should not be used as diagnoses or financial forecasts.

Context and Modification

Combustion should be considered together with other forms of planetary strength. Placement in an own sign, a kendra or trikona, or a position providing sign or positional strength may moderate the weakness. When a planet is both dignified and combust, both indications may remain relevant rather than one automatically cancelling the other.

Combustion may also affect the interpretation of planetary exchange involving the Sun. A combust exchange partner can suggest weaker results than a comparable non-combust planet.

In this tradition, combustion is initially identified from the degree relationship in D1. A D9 placement more than two houses ahead of the Sun is sometimes treated as substantially reducing its practical effect, while the original D1 condition may still remain part of the assessment.

Some approaches treat Mercury as less vulnerable than other planets when close to the Sun. This exception is best applied within the broader chart rather than as a universal exemption.

Combust planets are sometimes treated as health-risk indicators, particularly during their planetary periods. A combust Venus, for example, has traditionally been associated with possible sensitivity involving urinary, hormonal, or reproductive matters. Such symbolism may support general caution, but it cannot establish a medical condition and should not replace evaluation by a qualified health professional.

Practical Assessment

A balanced combustion assessment may consider the exact Sun-planet degree relationship, the planet's dignity and strength, its house rulership, the occupied house, relevant exchanges, D1 and D9 context, and the active dasha or antardasha. Taken together, these factors may show whether combustion is likely to operate as a pronounced weakness or as a condition moderated by supportive placements.
