Retrogression is observationally described as the apparent backward motion of a planet when viewed from Earth. In this tradition of Jyotish, a retrograde planet may be termed cheshta-bali, suggesting unusual effort, intensified capacity, or a departure from the expected pattern of expression.
Retrogression is not automatically read as favorable or unfavorable. It may alter how a planet expresses its qualities, and its results can appear unconventional, reversed, intensified, or responsive to changing circumstances. A naturally difficult planet may sometimes produce constructive results, while a naturally supportive planet may sometimes express more difficult tendencies.
Strength and Direction
Retrograde planets are traditionally associated with increased strength or capacity. Some interpretations express this emphasis as three or four times the strength of direct motion, while a constructive or dharmic orientation may be described as operating with four or five times greater force. These figures are best understood as interpretive emphasis rather than empirical measurement.
The same strength may not operate predictably. A retrograde planet can suggest an independent or resistant mode of action that does not readily follow the expected direction. It may also indicate a different perspective shaped by the qualities of the planet involved.

A retrograde planet may suggest impatience, haste, anxiety, a desire for rapid results, or a strong concern with influence and power. These are traditional behavioral indications rather than psychological diagnoses. Such a planet may also indicate tactical communication, an ability to persuade others, or an unconventional sequence in beginning and completing tasks.
Its apparent reversal of motion may be read as a swing-like pattern involving repetition, fluctuation, or alternating progress and retreat. When placed in the ascendant, a retrograde planet—including Jupiter—may suggest that the person approaches matters in an unusual or reversed order. When a retrograde planet occupies the sixth house, or when the sixth-house ruler is retrograde, sixth-house mistakes or conflicts may tend to recur.
Life Areas and Cautions
Some traditional readings associate retrograde planets with difficulty in personal life while also suggesting a heightened capacity for earning money. Neither indication establishes a dependable outcome and neither should guide financial decisions by itself.
Retrograde planets may also be associated with illness or health-related vulnerability, but this indication cannot diagnose a condition or replace medical assessment. In spiritual interpretation, retrogression may suggest a past-life burden, karmic repayment, or a recurring problem despite sustained effort. Such ideas remain matters of belief rather than established fact.
Some approaches may not treat retrogression alone as forming rajyoga. They may also associate it with unconventional or ethically ambiguous conduct, although this should not be used to make a fixed moral judgment about a person.

A concise interpretation may proceed by identifying the retrograde planet, considering its inherent qualities, examining the house it occupies or rules, and then observing whether its expression appears intensified, reversed, repetitive, or situationally altered. Retrogression alone should not be treated as a complete prediction.
