In this tradition of Jyotish, gochar refers to the continuing movement of planets through the sky. A birth chart is understood as a snapshot of planetary positions at the time and place of birth, while a transit chart represents their positions at a later moment.
Transit is often treated as a catalyst for tendencies already indicated by the birth chart and dasha. It is therefore interpreted in context rather than as an independent cause of events.
Reference Points
Natal Moon
A primary method counts each transiting planet from the natal Moon. Slow-moving planets such as Jupiter, Saturn, and Rahu are traditionally given particular attention from this reference point because they remain in a sign for comparatively long periods.
From the Moon, transit through the eleventh house is traditionally regarded as supportive for any planet. Mars, Saturn, and Rahu may also be read more constructively when moving through the trishadaya houses.
A planet transiting twelfth from the Moon may indicate expenditure of mental, physical, or financial resources. This is a cautious interpretive indication rather than a prediction of a specific outcome.
Three Ascendant References
When one reference point does not clearly describe an experience, transits can also be examined from the natal ascendant, the Sun ascendant, and the Moon ascendant. Repetition across all three may suggest a stronger emphasis.
Saturn affecting the same house or its ruler from all three references may indicate strain connected with that house. Jupiter influencing the same house or ruler from all three may suggest greater support, comfort, or opportunity in the corresponding area.
D1 and D9
Transit results may be assessed by considering D1 and D9 together. Agreement between the two charts can suggest that a theme deserves greater interpretive weight.
Planetary Timing and Strength
A planet crossing the ascendant may become especially significant for the chart as a whole. Its effect is traditionally considered strongest near the exact ascendant degree rather than across the entire sign equally.
One degree-based method associates stronger effects with these portions of a sign:
- Sun and Mars: 0–10 degrees
- Jupiter and Venus: 10–20 degrees
- Moon and Saturn: 20–30 degrees
- Mercury, Rahu, and Ketu: 0–30 degrees
These ranges are best treated as interpretive guidelines rather than fixed boundaries.
Longer Transits
Jupiter, Saturn, and Rahu are treated as slow-moving planets in transit analysis. Jupiter is traditionally associated with a stay of about one year in a sign, Saturn with about two and a half years, and Rahu with about one and a half years.
Double-transit analysis focuses particularly on the combined influence of Saturn and Jupiter. When both emphasize the same house or related factors, the corresponding topic may become more prominent within the wider chart and dasha context.
When transit Saturn crosses natal Saturn, Saturnian themes may become more pronounced. Their expression depends on Saturn's natal role and condition rather than carrying one universal meaning.
Special Distinctions
Sade Sati is calculated by comparing transit Saturn with the natal Moon. It is not defined by the Moon transiting the natal house of Saturn.
Vish dosha is treated as a natal relationship involving Saturn and the Moon, whereas Sade Sati is treated as a transit condition. Keeping natal combinations separate from transit conditions can help avoid conflating distinct techniques.
Muhurta may also consider current transits, although it is a separate timing method that can include the ascendant, choghadiya, yoga, and rahukal.
Practical Synthesis
A concise transit assessment may proceed by:
- Establishing the current planetary positions.
- Counting them from the natal Moon.
- Comparing results from the natal, Sun, and Moon ascendants.
- Examining relevant houses, rulers, connections, and exact degrees.
- Considering D1 and D9 together.
- Giving additional weight to longer Saturn, Jupiter, and Rahu transits.
- Interpreting repeated themes within the natal chart and dasha context.
A transit indication tends to become more meaningful when several of these factors converge, but it remains a symbolic interpretive framework rather than a certain forecast.
