Meaning
The 9th harmonic divisional chart (D9) — the most important varga chart, used to assess marriage, the soul's purpose, and dharmic path.
Etymology
Sanskrit nava (nine) + aṃśa (portion, division) — the 9th harmonic divisional chart, each sign divided into 9 equal parts of 3°20'.
Detailed Explanation
Navāṃśa (D9) is the most important of all divisional (varga) charts in Vedic astrology. Each 30° zodiac sign is divided into nine equal portions of 3°20', and each portion maps to a specific sign in the navamsha chart. The navamsha is primarily used for: (1) Marriage and partnership indications — the 7th house and its lord in the navamsha reveal much about the quality of marriage; (2) Soul purpose — the sign occupied by the Atmakaraka in the navamsha (Karakamsha) shows the soul's highest calling; (3) Planet strength confirmation — a planet in the same rashi in both D1 and D9 (vargottama) is significantly strengthened. Every good Vedic reading considers both the rashi and navamsha charts together.
