गणेश चालीसा Gaṇeśa Cālīsā
The Gaṇeśa Cālīsā is a forty-verse devotional hymn (cālīsā) dedicated to Lord Ganesha — the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, and the supreme remover of obstacles (Vighnahartā). The text is

जय गणपति सदगुण सदन, कविवर बदन कृपाल।
विघ्न हरण मंगल करण, जय जय गिरिजालाल॥

Victory to Ganapati, the abode of all virtues, merciful with the face of the best of poets — the remover of obstacles, the creator of auspiciousness. Victory, victory to the son of Girija (Parvati)!

Victory, victory, victory to Ganapati, the king of the Ganas — bringer of auspiciousness and accomplisher of all good works.

विश्व विनायक बुद्धि विधाता॥
विश्व विनायक बुद्धि विधाता॥
Victory to the elephant-faced one, the bestower of happiness — the universal Vinayaka, the grantor of intelligence.

वक्र तुण्ड शुची शुण्ड सुहावन।
तिलक त्रिपुण्ड भाल मन भावन॥
तिलक त्रिपुण्ड भाल मन भावन॥
Your curved trunk is beautiful and lustrous; on your forehead gleams the triple mark (tripundra) that captivates the mind.

राजत मस्तक मुकुट सुहावन।
कोटि सूर्य जिसकी छवि भावन॥
कोटि सूर्य जिसकी छवि भावन॥
On your head shines a beautiful crown; your radiance is pleasing like the light of millions of suns.

देव शम्भु की शक्ति सँग लाई।
तुम पैदा भये जग हितकाई॥
तुम पैदा भये जग हितकाई॥
Born of the divine power of Lord Shambhu (Shiva) — you were born for the welfare of the entire world.

अहि मस्तक पर गज मस्तक धारी।
सब जग पूजत तुम्हें नर नारी॥
सब जग पूजत तुम्हें नर नारी॥
The elephant's head rests upon the divine form — all men and women in the world worship you.

तुम्हारी महिमा पुण्य बखानी।
महाकाय शक्ति बली ज्ञानी॥
महाकाय शक्ति बली ज्ञानी॥
Your glory is extolled as holy and meritorious — you are immense in form, mighty in power, and endowed with wisdom.

नाना माल फूल चढ़त तुम पर।
भक्त अर्पण करत सब सुमन वर॥
भक्त अर्पण करत सब सुमन वर॥
Various garlands and flowers are offered to you; devotees present to you the finest of blooms.

दुर्वादल गणपति जो चढ़ावे।
सब काज हरष मन को पावे॥
सब काज हरष मन को पावे॥
Whoever offers dūrvā grass (sacred to Ganesha) to Ganapati will accomplish all tasks with a joyful mind.

विधान सहित पूजा को करते।
कलुष पाप सब नरक निवारते॥
कलुष पाप सब नरक निवारते॥
Those who worship according to the prescribed rites remove all sins and impurities and are freed from the path to hell.

शंकर सुवन भवानी नन्दन।
शुभ गुण धाम जगत जन वन्दन॥
शुभ गुण धाम जगत जन वन्दन॥
Son of Shankara, delight of Bhavani (Parvati) — abode of auspicious qualities, worshipped by all people of the world.

ऋद्धि सिद्धि तुम्हारी दासी।
कमला भी सेवन में राशी॥
कमला भी सेवन में राशी॥
Riddhi (prosperity) and Siddhi (accomplishment) are your handmaidens; even Goddess Lakshmi is eager in your service.

सर्व दोष जो कहीं समाये।
शुभ काज नहिं होत बिन आये॥
शुभ काज नहिं होत बिन आये॥
All defects are contained in your absence — no auspicious work can proceed without invoking you.

पान सुपारी चढ़त भोग में।
दीप धूप लाजा फल योग में॥
दीप धूप लाजा फल योग में॥
Betel leaf and areca nut are offered as food; lamps, incense, parched rice, and fruits are presented in worship.

अंकुश पाश धारण करते हो।
ऋद्धि सिद्धि सहित विचरते हो॥
ऋद्धि सिद्धि सहित विचरते हो॥
You carry the goad (ankusha) and the noose (pasha) — you move about accompanied by Riddhi and Siddhi.

विघ्न विनाशन मंगल दाता।
तुम भक्तन के सुखदाता विख्याता॥
तुम भक्तन के सुखदाता विख्याता॥
Destroyer of obstacles, bestower of auspiciousness — you are renowned as the giver of happiness to your devotees.

प्रकट स्वरूप शक्ति अनुहारी।
पाती पद पाटी निज धारी॥
पाती पद पाटी निज धारी॥
Your manifest form reflects the divine Shakti; you bear the emblems of your own sacred station.

जटा जूट विराजत मस्तक।
जटा जाल विलम्बित तट कट॥
जटा जाल विलम्बित तट कट॥
Matted locks crown your head; cascading braids hang around your temples, adorning your form.

मोदक तुम्हें अति प्रिय लागे।
भक्त जन हर्षित होकर जागे॥
भक्त जन हर्षित होकर जागे॥
Modaka (sweet dumplings) are especially dear to you; your devotees wake with great joy to prepare them.

नाना भाँति सदा ही पूजत।
नाम जपत मन पाप न छूजत॥
नाम जपत मन पाप न छूजत॥
You are worshipped in many ways at all times; chanting your name, the mind is never touched by sin.

सुनन को सब चाहत जाहीं।
किन्तु न देहि अपना बताहीं॥
किन्तु न देहि अपना बताहीं॥
All desire to hear your glories; yet you do not reveal your innermost self to all.

जय जय गणपति जगत उजागर।
नाम जपत निशि दिन मन मागर॥
नाम जपत निशि दिन मन मागर॥
Victory, victory to Ganapati who illumines the world — chanting your name day and night, the mind is uplifted.

तुम्हारे भजन राम को पावें।
जन्म जन्म के पाप नसावें॥
जन्म जन्म के पाप नसावें॥
Through your devotional songs one attains the Lord; the sins accumulated over many lifetimes are destroyed.

शनि जब सिर पर बाल विनाशे।
तुम गज मुण्ड धर सब पर राजे॥
तुम गज मुण्ड धर सब पर राजे॥
When Saturn's gaze destroyed your original head as a child, you received the elephant's head and thence ruled over all.

पार्वती माँ की ममता भारी।
तुम सहित शोक हरत दुखहारी॥
तुम सहित शोक हरत दुखहारी॥
Mother Parvati's affection for you is immense; together with you she removes grief and all sorrow.

शिव सुत बैठे सिंहासन ऊपर।
तुम प्रथम पूज्य सब मानत सत्य॥
तुम प्रथम पूज्य सब मानत सत्य॥
O son of Shiva, seated on your throne — all truly acknowledge you as the first and foremost deity to be worshipped.

चार भुज तुम विश्व विहारी।
सुन्दर मूर्ति विलसत भारी॥
सुन्दर मूर्ति विलसत भारी॥
With four arms you wander throughout the universe; your beautiful form shines with great splendour.

गण गणेश गोसाईं कृपाला।
पाद पंकज नित धरत नर चाला॥
पाद पंकज नित धरत नर चाला॥
O merciful Lord Ganesha, master of the ganas — people forever carry their steps to your lotus feet.

धूप दीप अरु माल फुलावन।
भक्त जन प्रभु को नित ध्यावन॥
भक्त जन प्रभु को नित ध्यावन॥
Incense, lamp, and garlands of flowers — your devotees daily meditate upon the Lord.

अष्टभुज तव रूप सुहावन।
सब पर दया करत हो भावन॥
सब पर दया करत हो भावन॥
In your eight-armed form you are beautiful — showing compassion to all, you are ever pleasing.

दीनन की लाज रखत नित आपा।
दुःख दर्द सभी नसावत पापा॥
दुःख दर्द सभी नसावत पापा॥
You always guard the honour of the humble and the needy; you destroy all grief, pain, and sin.

भक्त की आन रखत प्रभु मेरे।
भव जल से उतारत तट तेरे॥
भव जल से उतारत तट तेरे॥
O my Lord, you protect the honour of your devotees; you carry them across the waters of worldly existence to your own shore.

विद्या वारिधि बुद्धि विधाता।
धन धान्य सम्पदा के दाता॥
धन धान्य सम्पदा के दाता॥
You are the ocean of knowledge and the grantor of wisdom — the giver of wealth, grain, and all prosperity.

सभी मनोरथ पूर्ण करावत।
भक्तन को सुख-सम्पदा देत॥
भक्तन को सुख-सम्पदा देत॥
You fulfil all desires; you grant happiness and prosperity to your devotees.

चारों युग परताप तुम्हारा।
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
Your glory and greatness spans all four ages — your fame illumines the entire world.

मातु-पिता तुम्हारे हम दासा।
कीजै नाथ हृदय में वासा॥
कीजै नाथ हृदय में वासा॥
O Lord, we are servants of your parents (Shiva and Parvati) and of you — please make your abode in our hearts.

जो यह पाठ करे चालीसा।
सो सिद्धि प्राप्त करे नित नीसा॥
सो सिद्धि प्राप्त करे नित नीसा॥
Whoever recites this Chalisa will constantly attain perfection (siddhi) day and night.

संकट में जो गणपति ध्यावे।
सो अपनी आपद से मुक्त पावे॥
सो अपनी आपद से मुक्त पावे॥
Whoever meditates on Ganapati in times of trouble will be liberated from their afflictions.
40
जो गण गणेश निरंतर ध्यावे।
सो मोक्ष का अधिकारी पावे॥
सो मोक्ष का अधिकारी पावे॥
Whoever continually meditates on Lord Ganesha becomes worthy of and attains liberation (moksha).

श्री गणेश यह चालीसा पाठा।
कीन्ह तुलसीदास कहि जग माथा॥
कीन्ह तुलसीदास कहि जग माथा॥
This Chalisa of Shri Ganesha was composed and recited, praising the crown of the world.
