Clad in white, seated on the white lotus, dwelling in the lotus — holding the veena and a book, enchanting in form.

चारों वेद बनाए तुमने शारदे ।

O Sharade, you created the four Vedas; you gave the world the shastras, Puranas, and the art of poetry.

मधुर-कण्ठ दो माँ कवि-जन को भारी ।
वाक्-सिद्धि दो मम बुद्धि-विचारी ।।

Grant a sweet voice to the poets who long for it; grant clarity of thought and mastery of speech to my intellect.

Lotus-handed, lotus-faced, the auspicious one — eternally venerated throughout the world.

त्रिशूल-धनु-बाण नहिं तेरे हाथ ।
पुस्तक-वीणा-माला हैं तेरे साथ ।।
पुस्तक-वीणा-माला हैं तेरे साथ ।।
No trident, bow, or arrow in your hands — only a book, a veena, and a garland accompany you.

शस्त्र तुम्हारे शब्द और ज्ञान जानो ।
भव-अज्ञान दूर करो यह मानो ।।

Your weapons are words and knowledge — with these you banish the darkness of worldly ignorance.

महामूर्ख को पंडित कर देती हो ।
अज्ञ को ज्ञान-प्रकाश तुम देती हो ।।

Without you no one gains knowledge in this world; without you the lamp of learning does not burn.

दीन-दयाला माँ सरस्वती शरणा ।
पाप-दुःख-भव-दर्द सब हरणा ।।

Mother Saraswati, the refuge of the humble — she removes all sin, sorrow, and worldly pain.

सन्तान-हित माँ शिक्षा-दीप जलावे ।
