Chalisa
कृष्ण चालीसा Kṛṣṇa Cālīsā
The Krishna Chalisa is a forty-verse devotional hymn in praise of Lord Krishna, composed in the traditional Hindi chalisa form. It follows the classic structure of two dohas framing forty chaupais —

नन्द-नन्दन नाम तेरो, कृष्ण मुरारी श्याम ।
भक्तन के हृदय-कमल में, करो सदा विश्राम ।।
भक्तन के हृदय-कमल में, करो सदा विश्राम ।।
Your name is Nanda's delight, O Krishna, Murari, the dark-hued one. Ever abide in the lotus-hearts of your devotees.

जय मुरलीधर वंशी-धारी ।।

Victory, victory to Krishna, benefactor of devotees! Victory to Muralidhara, the bearer of the flute!

देवकी के मन-भावन लाला ।
वसुदेव-पुत्र नन्द-नन्दाला ।।
वसुदेव-पुत्र नन्द-नन्दाला ।।
The beloved child of Devaki, son of Vasudeva, the delight of Nanda — that is you.

कारागृह में तुमने अवतारा ।
देवों ने जय-जय उच्चारा ।।
देवों ने जय-जय उच्चारा ।।
You took birth in the prison cell of Mathura; the gods rejoiced and proclaimed victory.

यमुना के पार पहुँचाए बाबा ।
गोकुल में हुए लाल-मनभावा ।।
गोकुल में हुए लाल-मनभावा ।।
Your father carried you across the Yamuna; in Gokul you became the beloved child of all hearts.

यशोदा-मैया की लाल किलकारी ।
घर-घर में नन्द के गलियारी ।।
घर-घर में नन्द के गलियारी ।।
The joyful cries of Yashoda's beloved child rang through every lane of Nanda's village.

पूतना-दैत्य-वध किन्हो बाले ।
त्रिणावर्त को भी मार डाले ।।
त्रिणावर्त को भी मार डाले ।।
As a mere infant you slew the demoness Putana, and also the whirlwind demon Trinavarta.

माखन-चोर बड़े मनमोहन ।
गोपियों के मन हरत लुभावन ।।
गोपियों के मन हरत लुभावन ।।
The great butter-thief, the enchanter of hearts, who captivated the minds of all the gopis.

कालिय-नाग के फन पर नाचे ।
भव-संकट से भक्त को बाँचे ।।

You danced upon the hoods of the serpent Kaliya, purifying the Yamuna — and you free your devotees from worldly peril.

गोवर्धन गिरि उठायो कर में ।
इन्द्र-गर्व चूर किन्हो पल में ।।
इन्द्र-गर्व चूर किन्हो पल में ।।
You lifted Mount Govardhana in your hand; in an instant you crushed the pride of Indra.

गोपाल गोकुल-वासी गइया-चारे ।
मुरली की धुन से सब दिल हारे ।।

Gopala, dweller of Gokul, herdsman of cows — all hearts yielded to the melody of your flute.

राधा-प्रिय मधुसूदन प्यारे ।
वृन्दावन-वन में रास पसारे ।।
वृन्दावन-वन में रास पसारे ।।
Beloved of Radha, the dear Madhusudana — you spread the Rasa-lila through the forest of Vrindavan.

महा-रास रचाया वन में जाकर ।
गोपी-गण मगन भए सब आकर ।।
गोपी-गण मगन भए सब आकर ।।
You enacted the great Rasa in the forest; all the gopi-throngs came and were absorbed in bliss.

कंस-वध हेतु मथुरा आए ।
अक्रूर संग चलत सुहाए ।।
अक्रूर संग चलत सुहाए ।।
To slay Kamsa you came to Mathura, journeying beautifully in the company of Akrura.

कुवलयापीड गज को मारा ।
कंस-दैत्य का गर्व उतारा ।।
कंस-दैत्य का गर्व उतारा ।।
You slew the mighty elephant Kuvalayapida and brought down the arrogance of the demon Kamsa.

कंस को जग से मुक्त कराया ।
माता-पिता को बंधन छुड़ाया ।।
माता-पिता को बंधन छुड़ाया ।।
You freed Kamsa from this world and released your parents Devaki and Vasudeva from their chains.

सुदामा-सखा बाल-संगाती ।
दीन्ही सम्पदा मिटाई विपत्ती ।।
दीन्ही सम्पदा मिटाई विपत्ती ।।
Your childhood friend Sudama came in poverty; you blessed him with wealth and ended his hardship.

द्वारकाधीश राज-दुलारे ।
षोडश-सहस्र पत्नी के प्यारे ।।
षोडश-सहस्र पत्नी के प्यारे ।।
Lord of Dwarka, the jewel of kings, the beloved of sixteen thousand wives.

नरकासुर वध कर सुख दाता ।
भक्त-जनों के दुःख के हर्ता ।।
भक्त-जनों के दुःख के हर्ता ।।
You slew Narakasura and gave joy; you are the destroyer of your devotees' sorrows.

भरी सभा में चीर बढ़ाई ।।

You preserved Draupadi's honour in the packed assembly, multiplying her garment without end.

कुरुक्षेत्र में बाजा भाला ।।

Friend of the Pandavas, upholder of dharma — on the field of Kurukshetra you raised your standard.

अर्जुन-सारथी बने तुम श्याम ।
गीता-ज्ञान दिया निज-काम ।।
गीता-ज्ञान दिया निज-काम ।।
You became Arjuna's charioteer, O dark-hued one, and imparted the eternal wisdom of the Gita.

धर्म-स्थापन हेतु अवतारे ।
सज्जन-पालन दुष्ट-संहारे ।।
सज्जन-पालन दुष्ट-संहारे ।।
You descend to re-establish dharma — to protect the righteous and destroy the wicked.

विश्वरूप का दर्शन दीन्हा ।
अर्जुन को ब्रह्म-ज्ञान किन्हा ।।
अर्जुन को ब्रह्म-ज्ञान किन्हा ।।
You revealed the cosmic Vishwarupa form and bestowed the knowledge of Brahman upon Arjuna.

ज्ञान-वैराग्य-योग सिखाया ।।

You revealed the path of exclusive devotion and taught the disciplines of knowledge, renunciation, and yoga.

करत भक्त तेरी नित्य सेवा ।।

All-knowing, all-powerful lord — your devotees render you their daily service.

शंख-चक्र-गदा-पद्म-धारी ।
जग-जग में तुम भव-भव-तारी ।।

Bearer of the conch, discus, mace, and lotus — in every world and every age you ferry all beings across.

मयूरपंख-शोभित वनमाली ।।

Clad in yellow silk, wearing a crown, adorned with peacock feathers, garlanded with forest flowers.

नयनन में नेह बसाया ।।

Dark-bodied, enchanting in form — your eyes brim with love.

अजर-अमर अनन्त-रूपाला ।
तोड़त भव-जन्म-मरण-जाला ।।

Ageless, immortal, of infinite forms — you sever the web of worldly birth and death.

तुम बिन कौन कृपा जग करहीं ।
तुम बिन कौन भव-सागर तरहीं ।।
तुम बिन कौन भव-सागर तरहीं ।।
Without you, who shows grace in this world? Without you, who crosses the ocean of existence?

जप-तप-व्रत-पूजा जब करिहो ।
कृष्ण-भजन मन माहिं धरिहो ।।
कृष्ण-भजन मन माहिं धरिहो ।।
Whenever you engage in japa, tapas, vows, or worship — hold Krishna's name within your heart.

जो नित कृष्ण-नाम नित जपहीं ।
ताके सब संकट दूर हटहीं ।।
ताके सब संकट दूर हटहीं ।।
Those who daily repeat Krishna's name — all their troubles are swept far away.

भक्त-कारज सदा तुम सारो ।
मुरारी नाम निरन्तर धारो ।।
मुरारी नाम निरन्तर धारो ।।
You ever accomplish the tasks of your devotees; hold the name Murari ceaselessly in your heart.

बाँसुरी की स्वर-लहरी अपारा ।
मन मोहत सुनि जग को न्यारा ।।
मन मोहत सुनि जग को न्यारा ।।
The boundless waves of the flute's melody captivate the mind and make the world wondrous.

प्रेम-भक्ति से सेवा कीन्हे ।
मन-वाँछित फल सब उन्हें दीन्हे ।।
मन-वाँछित फल सब उन्हें दीन्हे ।।
Those who served you with love and devotion received every fruit their heart desired.

कृष्ण-भजन सुख-मूल कहाई ।
भव-सागर से पार उतराई ।।
भव-सागर से पार उतराई ।।
Krishna's devotional hymn is known as the root of all joy; it carries one across the ocean of existence.

जो जन मन-वच-कर्म से ध्यावे ।
सो नर शीघ्र मोक्ष-पद पावे ।।
सो नर शीघ्र मोक्ष-पद पावे ।।
The person who meditates on Krishna through mind, word, and deed swiftly attains the state of liberation.

नित पढ़े जो कृष्ण-चालीसा ।
होय पूर्ण मनोरथ इच्छा ।।
होय पूर्ण मनोरथ इच्छा ।।
Those who daily recite the Krishna Chalisa — all their heartfelt wishes are fulfilled.

संकट-काल में नाम पुकारे ।
कृष्ण कृपा कर दुःख को टारे ।।
कृष्ण कृपा कर दुःख को टारे ।।
In times of crisis, call out the name; Krishna with his grace removes all sorrow.

पाठ करे यह भक्त-हितैषी ।
पावे सुख-सम्पत्ति अविनाशी ।।
पावे सुख-सम्पत्ति अविनाशी ।।
One who recites this — a true friend of devotees — gains imperishable joy and prosperity.

कृष्ण-चालीसा पाठ से, मिटे सकल भव-पीर ।
श्री कृष्ण-चरण-सेवन करो, हरे दुःख गम्भीर ।।
श्री कृष्ण-चरण-सेवन करो, हरे दुःख गम्भीर ।।
Through recitation of the Krishna Chalisa, all the pains of worldly existence are erased. Serve at the feet of Shri Krishna; he removes even the deepest sorrow.
