The Shiva Chalisa is a forty-verse devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva, composed in the chaupai-doha meter of medieval Awadhi Hindi — the same form used in the Ramcharitmanas and the Hanuman

जय गणेश गिरिजा सुवन, मंगल मूल सुजान।
कहत अयोध्यादास तुम, देहु अभय वरदान॥

Glory to Ganesha, son of Girija, who is the very root of auspiciousness and wisdom. Ayodhyadas prays: O Lord, grant us your fearless blessing.

सदा करत संतन प्रतिपाला॥
सदा करत संतन प्रतिपाला॥
Glory to the Lord of Girija, compassionate to the humble — ever nurturing and protecting his devotees.

भाल चंद्रमा सोहत नीके।
कानन कुंडल नागफनी के॥
कानन कुंडल नागफनी के॥
The crescent moon shines beautifully on your brow; earrings fashioned from serpent hoods adorn your ears.

अंग गौर शिर गंग बहाये।
मुंडमाल तन छार लगाये॥
मुंडमाल तन छार लगाये॥
Your body is luminous white; the Ganga flows through your matted locks; a garland of skulls adorns you and sacred ash covers your body.

वस्त्र खाल बाघांबर सोहे।
छवि को देखि नाग मन मोहे॥
छवि को देखि नाग मन मोहे॥
Your garment of tiger skin adorns you magnificently; even serpents are enchanted at the sight of your divine form.

मैना मातु की हवे दुलारी।
बाम अंग सोहत छवि न्यारी॥

Parvati, the beloved daughter of Maina, shines radiantly at your left side — a vision of incomparable beauty.

कर त्रिशूल सोहत छवि भारी।
करत सदा शत्रुन क्षयकारी॥
करत सदा शत्रुन क्षयकारी॥
The trident held in your hand shines with great splendor, ever destroying the forces that oppose righteousness.

नंदि गणेश सोहे तेहि ठाऊ।
बरगद बाम भृंगी नृत्यधाऊ॥
बरगद बाम भृंगी नृत्यधाऊ॥
Nandi and Ganesha stand radiant in that sacred place; beside the banyan at your left, Bhringi dances in swift devotion.

भूत प्रेत पिशाच निवासी।
करहिं सेव सब हर के दासी॥
करहिं सेव सब हर के दासी॥
The ghosts, spirits, and demons who dwell with Shiva all serve him as devoted attendants.

शिव शंकर परमेश्वर भारी।
सुर नर मुनि करहिं जयकारी॥
सुर नर मुनि करहिं जयकारी॥
Shiva, the auspicious Shankar, is the supreme and boundless Lord; gods, humans, and sages all raise victorious acclaim in his name.

जटाधारी गंग बहाई।
तीनों लोकन के दुख नसाई॥
तीनों लोकन के दुख नसाई॥
Bearer of matted locks from which the Ganga flows — Shiva removes the sorrows of all three worlds.

दक्ष यज्ञ बिन बुलाए आई।
सती ने देह अग्नि में जाई॥

Sati came to Daksha's yajna uninvited; when her Lord's honor was slighted, she surrendered her body to the sacred fire.

शिव तब गए वन तपस्या लाई।
जग से लिए मन वैराग रुखाई॥
जग से लिए मन वैराग रुखाई॥
Then Shiva retreated to the forest for deep meditation, turning from the world in austere renunciation.

उमा जन्म लिय शिव हित धाई।
पर्वत पुत्री भई मनभाई॥
पर्वत पुत्री भई मनभाई॥
Uma took birth, hastening to win Shiva — born as the beloved daughter of the mountain king, dear to all hearts.

कठिन तप करि शिव मन भाया।
पारवती ने वर निज पाया॥
पारवती ने वर निज पाया॥
Through fierce austerity she won Shiva's heart, and Parvati received the boon she had sought.

देवन सुर मिलि मंगल गाए॥
देवन सुर मिलि मंगल गाए॥
The marriage of Shiva and Gauri was celebrated with great ceremony; gods and celestials came together and sang songs of auspiciousness.

गणेश कार्तिकेय जन्म भए।
देवन को अति हर्ष दए॥
देवन को अति हर्ष दए॥
Ganesha and Kartikeya were born as Shiva's sons — their coming brought immeasurable joy to all the gods.

सागर मंथन में विष जाई।
देवन तब अरदास लगाई॥
देवन तब अरदास लगाई॥
When poison arose from the churning of the cosmic ocean, the gods immediately turned to Shiva in earnest prayer.

शिव दयाल विष पीया धारी।
रखि लिया जग के हितकारी॥
रखि लिया जग के हितकारी॥
The compassionate Shiva drank the terrible poison and held it in his throat, thereby protecting the world as its supreme benefactor.

नीलकंठ नाम तब पाए।
जगत के संकट दूर भगाए॥
जगत के संकट दूर भगाए॥
From that act Shiva received the name Neelakantha — the Blue-Throated One — and drove away the gravest crisis the world had ever faced.

त्रिपुरासुर महा दुराचारी।
हर ने बाण एक में संहारी॥

Tripurasura, the great evildoer, was destroyed by Hara (Shiva) with a single arrow, ending his terror over the three worlds.

देवन तब आनंद मनाया।
शिव की जय जय जग में गाया॥

The gods then celebrated in great joy, and shouts of Shiva's victory rang throughout all the worlds.

जलंधर असुर जब उठ धाया।
शिव से युद्ध मान ले आया॥

When the demon Jalandhara rose and rushed forth with arrogant confidence, he came to wage war against Shiva himself.

भक्त हर्षित भई मन आशा॥

Shiva destroyed Jalandhara; his devotees were filled with joy, and all their hopes and prayers were fulfilled.

कैलाश पर शिव नित्य विराजे।
भक्तन के मन में आनंद छाजे॥

Shiva eternally resides on Mount Kailash; his presence fills the hearts of his devoted worshippers with abiding joy.

Mallikarjuna and Bhimashankar shine with sacred radiance; Trimbakeshwar and Nageshwara reign in eternal glory.

Kedarnath, Vaidyanath, and Grishneshwar — these holy abodes are where Shiva fulfills the deepest wishes of all who approach.

अमरेश्वर हर भव के क्लेशा॥

Omkareshwar, Mahakaleshwar, Rameshwaram, Amreshwar — all are forms of Shiva who removes the torments of worldly existence.

काशी पावन तीरथ भारी।
मुक्ति देत हर भव दुखहारी॥
मुक्ति देत हर भव दुखहारी॥
Kashi is the supreme and most sacred of all pilgrimages; there Shiva grants liberation, removing every sorrow of worldly existence.

जो ध्यावत शिव चित लाई।
पावत सुख संपत मनभाई॥
पावत सुख संपत मनभाई॥
Whoever meditates on Shiva with full and steady concentration attains the joy and prosperity their heart most deeply desires.

भक्त जनन हर देत रिद्धि।
शिव सेवन से बाढ़त सिद्धि॥

To his devotees, Shiva grants abundance and material prosperity; through devoted service to Shiva, spiritual powers grow and flourish.

पुत्र धन यश सब कुछ पाई।
शिव की महिमा जग में छाई॥

Children, wealth, and fame — all are obtained through Shiva's boundless grace; his glory pervades every corner of the world.

जो संकट में उनको सिमरहीं॥

Shiva fulfills all heart-held wishes for those who remember him in times of distress and difficulty.

दुःख रोग भय शिव नसावत।
भक्त के मन में आनंद लावत॥

Shiva destroys sorrow, disease, and fear; he fills the devotee's heart with joy and an abiding sense of peace.

जन्म जन्म के पाप हरेता।
शिव की कृपा से मोक्ष देता॥

Sins accumulated across countless lifetimes are erased; through Shiva's grace, the path to liberation opens fully.

अटल भक्त को मुक्ति दिलावत॥

At the end of life, steadfast devotees are guided to Shivaloka, Shiva's eternal realm, and liberation is bestowed.

तब शिव आवत भक्त-हितकारी॥

When the world cries out in great distress, Shiva arrives as the one who brings welfare and refuge to all his devotees.

शिव की कृपा से भव भय नासे।
जग में सुख संपत गुण पासे॥
जग में सुख संपत गुण पासे॥
Through Shiva's grace, the fears of worldly existence are destroyed; joy, prosperity, and virtuous qualities are gained in this life.

जो यह चालीसा नित गावत।
ताको शिव सब मनमाँगत पावत॥

Whoever recites this Chalisa daily — Shiva grants them everything their heart sincerely prays for.

Thus speaks Ayodhyadas: the Shiva Chalisa is a treasury of sanctity — a mine of pure blessings for all who recite it.

तुम मेरी मनोकामना, पूर्ण करो जगदीश॥

Each morning, rising with faithful discipline, recite this Chalisa. O Lord of the Universe, fulfill my deepest heart's wish.
