हनुमान चालीसा Hanumān Cālīsā
The Hanumān Cālīsā is a forty-verse devotional hymn composed by the saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas (c. 1532–1623 CE) in the Awadhi dialect of Hindi. It forms part of his larger work the Vinaya-Patrika

श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि।
बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥
बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥
Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust of the lotus feet of the holy Guru, I sing the pure, unblemished glory of Raghuvara (Rama) — which bestows the four fruits of life (dharma, artha, kama, moksha).

बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार।
बल बुद्धि बिद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार॥
बल बुद्धि बिद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार॥
Knowing myself to be ignorant and without intelligence, I meditate upon you, O son of the Wind (Hanuman). Bestow upon me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove my afflictions and impurities.

जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर।
जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥
जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥
Victory to Hanuman, the ocean of wisdom and virtue! Victory to the Lord of monkeys, who illumines all three worlds!

राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा।
अञ्जनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥
अञ्जनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥
O messenger of Rama, abode of incomparable strength — you are known by the names Anjani's son and Son of the Wind.

महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी।
कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥
कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥
O great warrior, mighty and thunderbolt-limbed — you dispel evil thoughts and are the companion of right understanding.

कञ्चन बरन बिराज सुबेसा।
कानन कुण्डल कुञ्चित केसा॥
कानन कुण्डल कुञ्चित केसा॥
Your complexion is golden, your dress is resplendent; you wear earrings and have curly hair.

हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै।
काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै॥
काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै॥
In your hands shine a thunderbolt and a flag; on your shoulder gleams the sacred thread made of munja grass.

शंकर सुवन केसरी नन्दन।
तेज प्रताप महा जग वन्दन॥
तेज प्रताप महा जग वन्दन॥
O son of Shankara (Shiva in the form of Wind), O delight of Kesari — your brilliance and glory are worshipped throughout the world.

बिद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर।
राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥
राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥
You are learned, virtuous, and supremely clever — ever eager to accomplish the work of Rama.

प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया।
राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥
राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥
You delight in hearing the glories of the Lord; in your heart dwell Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita.

सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा।
बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥
बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥
Assuming a minute form, you appeared before Sita; taking a terrible form, you burned Lanka.

भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे।
रामचन्द्र के काज सँवारे॥
रामचन्द्र के काज सँवारे॥
Assuming a fearsome form, you slew the demons and thus accomplished all the tasks of Ramachandra.

लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये।
श्रीरघुबीर हरषि उर लाये॥
श्रीरघुबीर हरषि उर लाये॥
Bringing the life-restoring herb (Sanjeevani), you revived Lakshmana; Shri Raghuvir (Rama) embraced you with great joy.

रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई।
तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥
तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥
Raghupati (Rama) praised you greatly, saying: 'You are as dear to me as my own brother Bharata.'

सहस बदन तुम्हारो जस गावैं।
अस कहि श्रीपति कण्ठ लगावैं॥
अस कहि श्रीपति कण्ठ लगावैं॥
Saying this, Shripati (Rama) embraced you warmly, and declared that even the thousand-mouthed Shesha serpent sings your glory.

सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा।
नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥
नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥
Sages like Sanaka and Brahma, the great sage Narada, Saraswati, and the lord of serpents (Shesha) — all praise your glory.

जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते।
कबि कोबिद कहि सकैं कहाँ ते॥
कबि कोबिद कहि सकैं कहाँ ते॥
Yama (god of death), Kubera (god of wealth), the guardians of the directions — where can poets and scholars begin to describe your greatness?

तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा।
राम मिलाय राजपद दीन्हा॥
राम मिलाय राजपद दीन्हा॥
You did great service to Sugriva by uniting him with Rama and securing for him the royal throne.

तुम्हरो मन्त्र बिभीषन माना।
लंकेश्वर भये सब जग जाना॥
लंकेश्वर भये सब जग जाना॥
Vibhishana heeded your counsel, and the whole world knows that he became the king of Lanka.
20
जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू।
लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥
लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥
The sun, thousands of yugas and yojanas away, you swallowed as a sweet fruit — such was your childhood feat.
21
प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं।
जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं॥
जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं॥
Placing the Lord's ring in your mouth, you leaped across the ocean — no wonder, for nothing is impossible for you.
22
दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते।
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥
सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥
All the difficult tasks of this world become easy with your grace.

राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे।
होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥
होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥
You are the guardian of Rama's door — none can enter without your permission.
24
सब सुख लहै तुम्हारी सरना।
तुम रच्छक काहू को डर ना॥
तुम रच्छक काहू को डर ना॥
One who seeks your refuge gains all happiness; with you as protector, there is nothing to fear.
25
आपन तेज सम्हारो आपै।
तीनों लोक हाँक ते काँपै॥
तीनों लोक हाँक ते काँपै॥
You alone can contain your own brilliance — at your roar, all three worlds tremble.

भूत पिशाच निकट नहिं आवै।
महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै॥
महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै॥
Ghosts and evil spirits dare not come near when the name of Mahavira (Hanuman) is uttered.
27
नासै रोग हरै सब पीरा।
जपत निरन्तर हनुमत बीरा॥
जपत निरन्तर हनुमत बीरा॥
Diseases are destroyed and all pain is removed for one who continuously chants the name of the brave Hanuman.

संकट ते हनुमान छुड़ावै।
मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै॥
मन क्रम बचन ध्यान जो लावै॥
Hanuman delivers from all troubles the one who meditates upon him in thought, deed, and word.

सब पर राम तपस्वी राजा।
तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा॥
तिन के काज सकल तुम साजा॥
Rama is the ascetic king who reigns supreme over all; you accomplish all his tasks.
30
और मनोरथ जो कोई लावै।
सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै॥
सोई अमित जीवन फल पावै॥
Whoever brings any desire before you receives the boundless fruit of life.
31
चारों जुग परताप तुम्हारा।
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
है परसिद्ध जगत उजियारा॥
Your glory spans all four ages (yugas); your fame illumines the entire world.
32
साधु संत के तुम रखवारे।
असुर निकन्दन राम दुलारे॥
असुर निकन्दन राम दुलारे॥
You are the protector of saints and sages, destroyer of demons, and the beloved of Rama.
33
अष्ट सिद्धि नौ निधि के दाता।
अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥
अस बर दीन जानकी माता॥
You are the bestower of the eight siddhis (supernatural powers) and nine nidhis (divine treasures) — this boon was granted to you by Mother Janaki (Sita).

राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा।
सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥
सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥
You hold the elixir of Rama's devotion — may you always remain the servant of Raghupati.

तुम्हरे भजन राम को पावै।
जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥
जनम जनम के दुख बिसरावै॥
Through your devotional worship, one attains Rama and forgets the sorrows of countless births.
36
अन्त काल रघुबर पुर जाई।
जहाँ जन्म हरिभक्त कहाई॥
जहाँ जन्म हरिभक्त कहाई॥
At the end of life, one goes to Raghuvara's divine abode; wherever one is reborn, one is called a devotee of Hari.
37
और देवता चित्त न धरई।
हनुमत सेई सर्व सुख करई॥
हनुमत सेई सर्व सुख करई॥
One need not contemplate any other deity — devotion to Hanuman alone grants all happiness.
38
संकट कटै मिटै सब पीरा।
जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥
जो सुमिरै हनुमत बलबीरा॥
All troubles are cut away and all pain is erased for one who remembers the mighty and brave Hanuman.
39
जय जय जय हनुमान गोसाईं।
कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाईं॥
कृपा करहु गुरुदेव की नाईं॥
Victory, victory, victory to Lord Hanuman! Bestow your grace upon me as a Guru does upon his disciple.

जो सत बार पाठ कर कोई।
छूटहि बन्दि महा सुख होई॥
छूटहि बन्दि महा सुख होई॥
Whoever recites this (Chalisa) a hundred times will be liberated from bondage and attain great bliss.

जो यह पढ़ै हनुमान चालीसा।
होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥
होय सिद्धि साखी गौरीसा॥
Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa will attain perfection — Gaurishah (Lord Shiva, the witness) is a witness to this.

तुलसीदास सदा हरि चेरा।
कीजै नाथ हृदय मँह डेरा॥
कीजै नाथ हृदय मँह डेरा॥
Tulsidas is forever a servant of Hari — O Lord, make your abode in my heart.

पवनतनय संकट हरन, मंगल मूरति रूप।
राम लखन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुर भूप॥
राम लखन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुर भूप॥
O son of the Wind, remover of troubles, embodiment of auspiciousness — O king of the gods, dwell in my heart together with Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita.
